Cane country, banana patches and Kirra
Murwillumbah is cane country. When we were kids the cane stood taller than both of us, and come crushing season the whole valley smelled sweet from the mill.
School holidays belonged to Dad's farm. We'd lose whole days in the banana patches, then spend the afternoon walking the cattle through to the next paddock, muddy to the knees. Toby was driving the tractor years before he could drive a car.
Weekends ran the other way, down to Tweed Heads. Kirra, Snapper Rocks, salt in our hair and sand all through the car on the way home.
Toby grew up with four sisters. Emilee is the closest, one year and six days older, so he's spent his whole life being asked "does this look alright?" and learned to answer honestly. These days Emilee leads the making: the fit, the fabric and the finish. Toby still gets asked. He still answers honestly.
Dust on the boots, salt in the hair. We grew up with both. Now we're making the clothes for it.
